The Chinese report was compiled by the workers.

The company is called Yantai Dongxing Pipeline Co. Ltd. According to its website, it is a Sino-foreign joint venture. (see: http://www.ydp.com.cn/english/neiye.asp?classid=64) According to the workers’ report, it manufactured spare parts for Honda and BMW.

Between the end of July and August 6, 2013, the workers went on strike to protest against low wages and to demand the re-election of the workplace union. They complained that the union chairperson had done nothing to promote workers’ interests and had even once endorsed the management’s action of unreasonably firing one of their colleagues. On August 2, the workers handed in the application to demand the re-election of their union to the local union officials.

Pressed by the workers’ action, the local official union stepped in to end the strike by reaching an agreement with the management, which includes a 17 percent wage rise and re-election of the union leadership in September. The workers were dissatisfied with the agreement but seemed to have no choice other than to accept it.

The report concludes with a balance sheet on their struggle. Despite the majority of the worker only being interested in demanding a wage rise and were less interested in demanding the union re-election at the beginning, their partial victory raised union awareness among some workers.
