This article by Chinese students argues that since Marx and Engels came out in defense of freedom of speech in 1848, a socialist country should therefore guarantee freedom of speech.

The incident of Nanfang Weekly reporters coming out in defense of their right to publish reports without censorship is worthy of attention because it is the first time, since 1989, that people within the establishment have demanded press freedom and the first time that ordinary people and students have publicly supported that political demand.
